I've left the Pilbara a number of times in my life. I'm not a fan of the heat, the flies, or how the red dirt gets everywhere—no matter how much you try to avoid it. Yet, here I am again, and for that, I'm grateful. For those who don't know me yet, I'm Robert Hegan, and I want to share my experience here in Karratha.
Introduction
My wife, Nadine, and I have lived in Karratha for the past four years. This period has been nothing short of transformational for me. Not only have I learned to appreciate this vibrant community, but it's also where I discovered a pivotal piece of my identity: my autism diagnosis. Since then, my mission has become clear—to create a bridge between the autistic community and the lifeblood of Karratha. I plan to do that through the lens of my camera.
Roots and Realisations
I've always had a deep connection to the Pilbara. From the rocky trails around Paraburdoo to the landmarks that punctuated my adolescence, the Pilbara has remained a constant backdrop throughout my life. Returning to Karratha nearly four years ago felt like returning to a childhood home. But this return brought an unexpected revelation: my autism. We moved to Karratha to follow a new career path, working with a not-for-profit organisation that provides programs and services to families of autistic children. Founded by my sister-in-law, Carol, the organisation was a safe space for her two autistic children. I was excited for the opportunity and the chance to be reunited with my family. However, I was also apprehensive because I knew nothing about autism. Imagine my surprise when a family dinner conversation shifted, and I found out I had autistic traits myself. Suddenly, my quirks and unique worldview had a name. This newfound understanding gave me a renewed sense of purpose and clarity. That night's conversation was truly life-changing.
From Classrooms to Cameras
Since then, I've had the privilege of working closely with incredible children on the autism spectrum, alongside their families, both one-on-one and in small groups. There are profound moments in my work that come from observing the little breakthroughs that are monumental in their own way. Whether it's a form of non-verbal communication, the ability to participate in everyday routines with their peers, or achieving something a family may not have thought was possible—these moments are significant. Many people take such things for granted, but to these families, these are monumental victories, and I have the privilege to be a part of that.
As I delved deeper into understanding my autism, a spark of confidence began to glow within me. It awakened a dormant passion for photography and videography. Now, armed with this self-awareness and buoyed by the support of my family, work, and community, I'm determined to chase this dream.
A Vision for the Future
What does it mean to truly capture the spirit of a place or a person? Is it captured in a photo, a video? Of course, but I believe there's more to it than that—intersectionality, the blending of perspectives, identities, and passions. My goal is to marry my love for autism advocacy with my passion for photography and videography. Through my lens, I hope to highlight stories that emanate from the heart of Karratha, thereby fostering understanding, connection, and cultural enrichment.
Through My Lens
I still have much to learn as I work to turn my vision from a dream to reality. From capturing the electric Dampier fireworks that light up our skies, to intimate moments with my wife in Coral Bay, to candid shots of friends and family, and even the exhilarating energy of the local cricket. And, of course, landscapes just around the corner that encapsulate the beauty of the Pilbara.
Conclusion
As I reflect on my journey—from childhood memories in Paraburdoo to my recent autism diagnosis and the rediscovery of my passion—I'm filled with hope and excitement for the future. With this blog and my new venture, I aim to weave narratives that resonate, inspire, and foster deeper connections. But for this vision to come alive, I need your support. Engage with me, share your stories, and let's embark on this journey together.
